His journey to entrepreneurship is a remarkable story of courage, dedication, and overcoming life’s greatest challenges.

A Legacy of Leadership: From the Army to the Construction Industry

Rodrigo’s story began in Colombia, where he served for 10 years in the Colombian Army. As a Commander and Logistics Officer, he led high-risk tactical operations, commanding over 90 soldiers with unwavering discipline and precision. His experience in the military instilled in him a deep sense of leadership, strategic planning, and the ability to perform under extreme pressure. He earned prestigious honors, including the “Faith in the Cause” medal, for his dedication and service.

In 2016, driven by a desire to build a new future, Rodrigo made the bold decision to leave the military and start over in the United States. Arriving with no job, limited English skills, and no guarantees, he embraced the challenge with determination. He took his first job as a warehouse assistant, working tirelessly to learn the mechanical insulation trade from the ground up. Through hard work and perseverance, he advanced to roles such as foreman, project manager, and estimator, gaining hands-on experience and mastering the industry for more than 9 years.

A Battle for Life: Surviving COVID-19

In 2020, Rodrigo faced his most daunting challenge when he contracted COVID-19. Despite being in good health, the virus ravaged his body, leading to a medically induced coma. Rodrigo was placed on an ECMO machine (a heart and lung bypass device) for 17 days to support his organs. During this time, he became the first patient in the United States to receive convalescent plasma therapy while on ECMO—a groundbreaking treatment that ultimately saved his life.

After five weeks in a coma and eight weeks in the hospital, Rodrigo defied the odds and made a miraculous recovery. His story of survival was covered by major media outlets, highlighting his courage, resilience, and gratitude toward the medical professionals who never gave up on him. Following his recovery, Rodrigo met the plasma donor who played a pivotal role in his survival, an emotional moment that symbolized hope and the power of community support.

Emerging from this life-altering experience with a renewed purpose, Rodrigo poured his heart and soul into his career. He founded El Dorado Specialty Contractors, driven by the desire to lead with integrity, deliver exceptional quality, and inspire others to overcome adversity. His company specializes in high-quality insulation solutions for HVAC and plumbing systems, serving commercial, industrial, and government projects.

Rodrigo’s military background makes him detail-oriented and mission-driven, ensuring that every project is completed with precision, efficiency, and safety. His ability to lead teams under pressure, combined with his deep understanding of the construction industry, sets El Dorado apart from the competition.
